Chronic Pain

Living with persistent pain can be exhausting both physically and mentally. It impacts quality of life across many contexts—including homecare, personal care, social, vocational, leisure, and community living.

Our team can support you in achieving meaningful personal and vocational goals, by helping you to better understand pain, explore different ways to self-manage (and reduce symptoms), and support activation (movement and exercise).

Following our interdisciplinary assessment, we will develop a customized treatment plan to meet your clinical and personal needs.

Our pain program involves daily programming activities that are delivered in our clinics and/or via Telehealth. The program is a combination of individual sessions with our clinicians and group-based activities.

For individuals needing additional support for mental health or addiction issues, we have programming streams that can be customized into the program. There is no need for multiple referrals or service providers.

Persistent (chronic) pain is probably having a huge effect on your life. Pain has both the visible impact on daily activities and function, as well as the less visible but equally important impact on your mood and mental health. We can offer help across all of these domains. Our program treatment philosophy is grounded in activation and self-management, which requires commitment. We will match your effort and support you in gaining a new understanding of your pain, and how to move forward with a meaningful and productive life. You will work with our Physician to better understand complicated symptoms and/or medical findings, for ongoing monitoring, education, and if needed for medication management. Sessions with our Psychologist or Registered Clinical Counsellor may include a host of evidence-based treatment modalities like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) strategies, to name just a few. Our Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist and Kinesiologist will work closely with you on exercises specific to your injury as well as functional activities that will transfer directly to gains in your daily life.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) classified Chronic Pain as a disease in its own right in the latest version (January 1, 2022) of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). This is validation for your clients and recognises the huge impact of chronic pain on our economy. At Actum Health we are experienced in working with chronic primary and secondary pain, including:
  • Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS),
  • Chronic headaches or orofacial pain,
  • Chronic visceral pain,
  • Chronic non-cancer pain,
  • Chronic widespread pain,
  • Chronic post-surgical pain,
  • Chronic neuropathic pain.
Our Pain program outcomes are driven by experienced clinicians who value truly interdisciplinary care, delivered through a biopsychosocial lens. Ultimately, our team firmly believes that change is possible (dispelling the familiar adage that pain is forever). Our services incorporate psychological, physical, and self-management dimensions coupled with optimising medication regimes to maximise functional abilities and quality of life for our clients. Communication with our referral source is integrated into our program services both verbally and through our comprehensive reports.
